Chubby Babies: Is it True That Fat Babies Are Healthy Babies?

That depends on what you mean by “fat.” It is normal for a baby to be fat. However,  Some studies showed that obese babies (according to the measurement charts for weight or BMI)or the babies with rapid weight gain (e.g. babies who were born with a lightweight and then they turned obese quickly  ) are more likely to become overweight later on in their lives.

All these factors are not the only ones that affect the potential of children’s obesity. In a British study with more than 8,000 children, researchers found several factors that increased the risk of obesity in children at the age of seven years.

These included an increase in BMI, a rapid increase in weight, or either one of the parents is overweight, or a child who is watching TV more than 8 hours a week and sleeping less than 10.5 hours a night.

Today, more babies are overweight comparing to 20 years ago. Almost 6% for babies under the age of 6 months and 10% for children under the age of 6 are threatened to be obese in the future. According to experts, early eating habits are essential to achieve and maintain a healthy weight later in life.

Nevertheless, most babies are not overweight. It is essential that the baby continues to receive much healthy food so that he can grow up healthily. Never put your baby on any kind of diet except under the supervision of a medical supervisor.

Experts say that there is no information to support the assumption that children at this age are likely to gain much weight in the future.

Try to breastfeed only in the first six months and then keep breastfeeding your baby till he reaches the age of one year. Babies who got breastfed in the first six months are usually slimmer. The reason behind this is that breastfed babies eat only when they are hungry, and not when they are forced by their parents.

  • Don’t force your baby to finish each bottle of milk or water, unless your child’s doctor instructs you to.
  • Always give your child more fruits and vegetables, and try to reduce cereals and grains.
  • Give only breastmilk to your little one, unless your child’s doctor gives other instructions.
  • The juice is not needed and is less nutritious than fruit. Try not to give your baby fruit juices or wait until your baby becomes a toddler.
  • If you want to give your baby some juice, just wait for a while till he reaches 6 months of age , and do not give him more than 4 ounces of 100% juice per day.
  • Do not give children any soft drinks or other sweet drinks.
  • Always eat well and be active, because your children imitate what you do exactly.

The baby remains naturally active when he first started to move his head, crawl and walk. Babies’ growth is kind of slow between the age of 12 and 15 months. Parents should understand that this is normal, and there is no need to worry, that does not mean that something is wrong with their Baby.
